Littelfuse Multipulse SIDAC Optimizes Halogen Lamp Ignition Circuit Design

Littelfuse has introduced the Kxxx1G L-Series Multipulse SIDAC, a thyristor power control device designed for 220-240V AC line installation. Thyristors, when used in conjunction with capacitors and transformers, produce multiple high voltage pulses that are required to illuminate a metal halide bulb. These new devices offer designers of metal halide lamp circuits the advantages of higher pulse voltages with lower switching losses and higher tolerance to input voltage variations, compared to the company's previously introduced Kxxx1G devices. Compared to competing products, the Kxx01GL series offers lower switching losses and therefore higher pulse voltages for pulse-start type ignition circuits. The Kxxx1G L-Series multi-pulse SIDACs are available in three different versions for greater design flexibility, while other manufacturers offer only two versions. The Kxxx1GL series has been modified for turn-on functions and reduced switching losses to meet the latest ignition circuit design, so these new devices are capable of producing pulse voltages that are at least 20% higher than the earlier Kxxx1G series.

Typical applications for the Kxxx1GL series include trigger circuits for metal halide lamps in large and medium metal halide lamp units, such as for gyms, street lighting, and stadium lighting.
